2.5 million ha. and 5 million tons. it is the bet of the sunflower for the next years
Within the framework of the traditional auction of the first batch of sunflowers that took place this week in Charata (Chaco), BCR News took the opportunity to interview various protagonists of the day.
The event organized by the Chaco Stock Exchange as host, and the participation of the Rosario Stock Exchange, the Santa Fe Stock Exchange, the Entre Ríos Cereals Exchange, the Rosario Cereals Arbitration Chamber, the Santa Fe, Arbitration Chamber of Cereals of Entre Ríos and ASAGIR, was a success.

By the way, Jorge Ingaramo, from ASAGIR, analyzed the surprising and influential international context of the war in Russia and Ukraine in which the meeting took place. “Sunflowers were already a great business before the conflict,” he said. “Producers were very cautious in forward sales; right now there is almost no supply, the industry is fighting to get the few producers that sell”.

He also added that “it's been a long time since we've seen such good sunflower prices, above 550 dollars a ton in Argentina. The international price was 1,700 dollars in Rotterdam for March and 1,400 dollars for October, in the northern hemisphere harvest. They are prices between 50 and 70% higher than the average of the last 10 years”.
For his part, Rubén Piceda, president of the Chaco Stock Exchange, was proud as host. "We have convened all the institutions that have to do with the sunflower production chain, which we do every year from the first batch." And as for the prize that goes to the producer of the first sale, he described it as "a very important incentive that is also a symbol of rewarding production as a whole."

In addition, the Unión Agrícola Avellaneda (purchaser of the first lot) was present at the auction through its Orientation Manager, Mariano Tortul, who declared: "Our presence is to support the sunflower production chain since we participate in it practically throughout the north of the country, from origination to industrialization”. And he added: "For us northerners it is very important that the auction be held in Charata, the sunflower is very important in the rotation of crops in the area, this day recognizes the productive and social fabric of the region."
The future in relation to the war in Eastern Europe

Bearing in mind that Ukraine and Russia are the two main exporters of sunflower oil in the world, both accounting for 78% of the product, Tortul analyzed that "the Argentine producer will surely increase its sunflower planting in the coming years, even if it is as a result of the unfortunate event of international conflict; and we are prepared to accompany this process”.

In relation to this, Piceda is convinced that both the Argentine countryside and industry have "real capacities to increase that production, so there is expectation of planting for the next campaign, although unfortunately the weather was not on this one," said the president of the young Chaco Stock Exchange, which is growing and "incorporating the real estate and financial trust business, cryptocurrencies and crypto mining."

“We have to reach 5 million tons in 5 years”, Ingaramo ups the ante and states: “Ukraine has 50% of the sunflower oil export market and Russia 28%. Of course the conflict is going to damage the production of those two countries (although I don't think Putin will allow the export price to rise much because he needs it for the domestic market), so there is no doubt that Argentina has to go back to 2.5 million ha. that we had in 2006-07 when they put the 32% retention to the point”.

The head of ASAGIR concluded by declaring that: “Ukraine, even before the conflict, had reached its peak in terms of area and performance. We have opportunities to grow."
