Cooperativa Unión Agrícola de Avellaneda: from the north of Santa Fe to the country and abroad
An entity that is an example of growth and expansion, born 102 years ago in an area with natural challenges that has diversified towards the industrialization of various business areas. We spoke with its president, Mauricio Quarin.
We spoke with Mauricio Quarin, President of the Cooperativa Unión Agrícola de Avellaneda, an entity that was born exactly 102 years ago in the city of Avellaneda, neighboring Reconquista, in the north of Santa Fe, and has experienced tremendous growth in recent decades.

Although, as Quarin says, it is "an area with poorer natural characteristics than the Pampa Húmeda", the agricultural work there has been characterized by diversity, starting from the "historical cultivation of cotton".

The president reported that "over time, the entity grew towards the Chaco and towards Santiago del Estero" and also diversifying its work areas: "The cooperative started with the agricultural business in the cotton process, even with its own ginner and

In the 1970s, the poultry business was integrated into its entire chain, from the egg, incubation, rearing, its own refrigerator, sale and export of chicken and its by-products”, he added.

Later, other areas were developed, according to Quarin, such as "yard, hardware store, supermarket chain, agro-inputs, contracts with YPF for the sale of fuel and lubricants, social services, insurance, prepaid medicine, and treasury consignment," he listed.

The difference of industrialization

The Cooperativa Unión Agrícola understands that, in its plans for the coming years, "the member is very interested in continuing to add value in the industrialization of raw materials" and agreeing on strategic alliances with various companies. "The export of by-products has a very important turnover margin, for this reason, relating to foreign actors means that we have gone from being a 'handrail' between the producer and the buyer to being involved in the entire process of industrialization," he declared. Quarin.

“We want to professionalize each sector of our structure. In the last 5 years we ventured into sunflower processing, soybean grinding; we are growing and becoming known not only in the NEA but throughout the country. Today we have 1,800 producers working with us, both small and medium and large, we even acquired a storage facility and offices in Salta”, deepened the agricultural producer.

Likewise, he added that they have “around 1,040 employees and the last balance showed the promising figure of 3,000 million pesos. The last two years were very good for milling, for example, but we know that these are businesses with ups and downs, you have to know how to foresee the future and be responsible in an interconnected world that can surprise you both with the price of commodities and with a war ”, reflected the leader.

The recently closed balance showed a turnover of 77,000 million pesos, with a profit of 3,000 million, well above the 1,800 million of the previous year.

Finally, Quarin valued that, through BCR News, he hopes "to be able to make ourselves known to other economic actors" from other areas of the country.
